How Do I Choose the Right EV Charger for My Home?

Choosing a home EV charger comes down to a few practical factors: how fast you need to charge, what your switchboard can support, and how you want to manage the setup day to day.

Charging speed

Most home chargers range from around 7kW to 22kW. A 7kW charger typically adds enough range overnight for daily driving, while faster units suit higher-mileage households or multiple EVs.

Single-phase or three-phase

Faster home charging speeds generally require three-phase power. If your home only has single-phase supply, your maximum charging speed will be capped accordingly, unless you upgrade the supply.

Smart features

Many chargers now offer app control, scheduling to charge during off-peak or solar generation hours, and load management, which is worth considering if you're also running other heavy appliances.

Switchboard capacity

Before choosing a charger, it's worth having a licensed electrician assess whether your switchboard has capacity for a dedicated EV circuit, this is one of the most common reasons an EV charger installation includes a switchboard upgrade.
