What's the Process for Getting an EV Charger Installed?

Installing a home EV charger is a fairly standard process, but knowing the steps helps set expectations on timing and cost.

1. Initial assessment

A licensed electrician reviews your switchboard, existing circuit capacity, and the cable run distance from the switchboard to where the charger will be mounted.

2. Quote

You'll get a clear quote covering the charger unit (if supplied), installation labour, and any switchboard upgrade needed to support a dedicated circuit.

3. Installation

On the day, the electrician runs a dedicated circuit from the switchboard, mounts the charger, and connects and tests the unit. A straightforward install is often completed in half a day.

4. Testing and sign-off

The finished installation is tested, and you're provided with a compliance certificate confirming the work meets required safety standards.

5. Ongoing use

Many chargers come with an app for scheduling and monitoring, worth setting up during or shortly after installation.
