Smoke alarms are compulsory in all Victorian residential properties, including houses, units, flats and townhouses.
Smoke alarms must meet AS 3786.
Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have hardwired smoke alarms with battery backup. Older homes may use battery-powered alarms.
Hardwired smoke alarms must be installed by a qualified, licensed electrician.
Rental providers must test alarms at least once every 12 months, in line with the manufacturer's instructions, and keep batteries replaced.
Annual smoke alarm safety checks are mandatory for Victorian rental properties from 25 November 2025.
A faulty smoke alarm in a rental is an urgent repair, and the rental provider must act immediately.
New homes and major renovations must meet the National Construction Code, which sets the number, location and interconnection of alarms.

John and his team were exceptional. I messaged John at 10:30 at night seeking an emergency hot water system installed as it was Friday the next day and mine had just broken that night. John was so helpful, walked me through the rebate process, flexible with times (as I had to work), and manages to get two guys to come out and do the replacement the next day. The men that came to replace the tank were really professional and helpful. The new tank looks really flash. Super happy with it.
