A safety switch, also called a residual current device (RCD), is one of the most important pieces of electrical safety equipment in your home. It constantly monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit, and if it detects current leaking somewhere it shouldn't, such as through a person, it can cut power in as little as 0.03 seconds.

Why safety switches matter

Without a safety switch, an electrical fault can take much longer to be detected, often not until a fuse blows or something is visibly wrong. A safety switch reacts almost instantly, which is the difference between a minor scare and a serious injury.

How many should a home have?

Ideally, every circuit in the home is protected: lighting, power, and any fixed appliances. Many older homes only have one safety switch covering a handful of circuits, which means a fault on one circuit can cut power to several rooms at once.
