Are Power Boards and Double Adaptors Safe to Use Long-Term?

Power boards and double adaptors are common in almost every Australian home, and used correctly they're safe, but they're also one of the more avoidable causes of household electrical fires.

The overloading risk

Every power board and outlet has a maximum rated load. Plugging in multiple high-draw appliances (heaters, kettles, hair dryers) through the same board can exceed that rating and generate heat.

Piggybacking power boards

Plugging one power board into another multiplies the risk and is generally not recommended. It compounds the load on a single outlet well beyond what it's designed for.

Signs of a problem

  • The power board or plug feels warm
  • You notice discolouration around the plug or socket
  • It's permanently overloaded rather than used occasionally

The better long-term fix

If a power board has become a permanent fixture in a spot rather than an occasional convenience, that's usually a sign the room needs more power points, a straightforward job for a licensed electrician.
